Blended on Purpose: The Best Wines Don’t Go Solo

FUN FACT: Blending wine isn’t a trend. It’s a tradition.

Let’s be honest, wine can feel a little rigid sometimes. Single varietal this, vintage that. But for me, some of the most interesting bottles come from wines that break away from those expectations. That’s where blending comes in, and it’s not just a modern twist. There are great reasons why winemakers blend wine, and it’s actually been part of winemaking for centuries.

Across Europe, winemakers have long mixed grape varieties not just for fun, but for function. In Bordeaux, you’ll find Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and others working together to build structure, depth, and balance. In the southern Rhône, blends like GSM (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre) are famous for layering ripe fruit with spice and earthy complexity. These wines didn’t become classics by accident They were crafted to be greater than the sum of their parts.

Back then, blending was also a bit of insurance. Different grapes ripen at different times, thrive in different soils, and respond differently to weather. Blending gave winemakers a way to smooth out the edges and roll with the unpredictability of the season.

Here in California, we’re lucky to have a bit more breathing room.

With our mix of warm days, cool nights, and wildly varied microclimates, we don’t face the same make-or-break vintage swings that some traditional regions do. From the sunny slopes of Dry Creek Valley to the foggy mornings along the Russian River, we can source grapes that are already thriving. Which means we don’t have to blend out of necessity.

We get to blend because we want to.

For me, that’s the magic. Blending becomes a tool for creativity, not correction. It’s a way to build flavor, texture, and personality. It lets me create wines that are more layered, more expressive, and honestly, just more fun to drink.

That’s what Amalgam is all about. Exploring unexpected combinations. Crafting wines that are smooth, bold, or somewhere in between. Wines that aren’t trying to impress you with status, but invite you in with character.

In the next post, I’ll share more about why I’ve chosen to focus on blends at Amalgam—what draws me to them as a winemaker, what I hope they offer to curious wine drinkers, and why I find them some of the most compelling wines to make and enjoy.

This is wine for real life—crafted with care, meant to be explored.
